Chapter Fourteen

“What do you think you’re doing?” Ray made a dive to retrieve the escapee, but the snow-white feline darted to safety and gave his back an arch that would be the envy of any yoga instructor. “Monica is going to kill me if she finds you outside. She was clear about the rules before she left you in my care. You’re an indoor cat. Always have been. Always will be.”

The cat flexed his furry toes, his curved claws extending and digging into a pile of dirt that was rapidly turning his pristine fur into a dusty mess.

“Are you listening to me?” As she spoke, Ray tried to calculate how close she could get to the beast before he noticed she was moving. Considering this would make her fourth attempt, she already knew the answer was likely to be not nearly close enough.

Without deigning to acknowledge Ray in the slightest, the naughty kitty settled into a particularly filthy spot right alongside the garden fence and proceeded to lick his butt.

“Mr. Fluffles!” Ray put both hands on her hips and stared him down.

Apparently willing to respond to his full name, the behemoth of a cat momentarily stopped, his back leg still stretched in the air. He blinked as if to say that whatever she had on her mind, she’d better make it quick because he had important business to attend to.

“Get back inside this instant before your mother gets home.” Ray pointed a scolding finger at the cat, not that he seemed to care. She switched tactics, folding her hands together and pleading. “Please, little buddy. For some reason she seems to like you, and she’ll be heartbroken if you get hurt.”

It had been nearly two hours since Monica had texted to say she was finally on her way back from Boston. Not that Ray had been counting the minutes or anything, but what was supposed to have been a quick and easy trip to sort out some paperwork regarding the vineyard’s food and beverage licenses had turned into a three-day ordeal.

When they’d planned the harvesting event for the first weekend of October, Ray had known time would be tight, but she’d assumed she would be the one scrambling to complete the finishing touches that would make their vineyard photo-op ready. Instead, the last major item on her task list had been checked off the night before, and they were down to the wire waiting on Monica to be given a single piece of paper with the right stamp on it so they could legally uncork the wine and serve it to the over one hundred guests who would be arriving in a few short hours. Considering the whole draw of the event was wine, it was no minor detail.

The rumble of an engine caused Ray to snap her head up. Her heart was in her throat as she anticipated Monica’s return. It had nothing to do with missing her during her absence, Ray assured herself. It was fear of getting in trouble over the cat.
